William Shakespeare

His plays written for a small repertory theatre in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, are nowadays performed more often and in more countries that those of any other playwright. W. Shakespeare's early life was sent in Stratford-upon-Avon where he attended the local grammar school.

At 18 he married a local girl, Anne Hathaway, who bore him a daughter, Susanna, and twins, hamlet and Judith. By 1584 Shakespeare had emerged as a rising playwright in London. He continued to live there, enjoying fame and prosperity as a member of London's leading theatre company - the Lord Chamberlain's Company (afterwards known as the King's men).

In the early years of the 17th century W. Shakespeare produced his great tragedies, which mark both the summit of his art and one of the high points in the history of Western literature. The four principal tragedies are 'Hamlet', 'Othello', 'King Lear' and 'Macbeth'. These plays examine with great psychological subtlety how personality flaws in the main characters lead inevitably to the tragic destruction of themselves and almost everyone around them. The tragedies have complex, perfectly structured plots and are enriched by a quality of language that it at once deeply poetical and emotionally expressive while conveying mature philosophical ideas.

In 1610 after Shakespeare had become successful in London he retired to his birthplace. He bought the biggest house in Stratford and lived as a country gentleman. Here he probably wrote 'The Winter's Tale' and 'The Tempest'; and here he died in 1616. He was buried in the parish church in Stratford.
